Join the Lower Mainland’s first NatureBlitz on Saturday, February 27th in the Reifel Bird Sanctuary and Alaksen National Wildlife Area, located at 5191 and 5421 Robertson Rd (respectively) on Westham Island in Delta, BC. This free, family-friendly nature adventure offers a dawn to dusk line-up of wildlife walks, outdoor exploration and even a photography contest, all with the help of local naturalists and nature experts from NatureKids BC, Nature Canada, the BC Waterfowl Society, the Delta Naturalists Society, the Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust and the Canadian Wildlife Service.
Participants will get an up-close, educational look at waterfowl and songbirds, small grassland mammals, invasive species, and possibly even owls, bats and other creatures of the night through a series of activities at each of these amazing natural areas. So get your warm outdoor clothing (and rain gear), gum boots and flashlights ready and come join us as we explore the midwinter mysteries of nature right on Metro Vancouver’s doorstep. It’s nearby nature – and it’s your NatureHood! See more at: http://naturecanada.ca/news/blog/lower_mainland_natureblitz/ |

The Biological Survey of Canada BioBlitzes began in 2001. At first, the gatherings focused on insects and other arthropods in key grassland habitats. Now, however, the annual BSC BioBlitz is no longer exclusively associated with grasslands or arthropods; rather, the location is chosen to increase the knowledge of all biota in an area that is considered nationally significant. For more information and reports from past BSC blitzes, please visit http://biologicalsurvey.ca/pages/read/bio-blitzes.
In 2016, the BSC BioBlitz will take place in and around Carmacks, Yukon--an ideal location because of its unique history and geography at the edge of unglaciated Beringia. The area is poorly-known biologically, but is home to some species that are found nowhere else in the world. Check out the species lists for the area here Can't make it to the Yukon? On behalf of the Whistler Naturalists, we would like to invite you to this year’s BioBlitz on the weekend of July 8-10th. This will be our 10th annual event which makes it Canada’s longest-running BioBlitz! We are planning some celebrations to mark the occasion on Saturday night so hope to get as many veterans back as possible, as well as keen newbies.
In just nine BioBlitz weekends BioBlitz scientists like you have identified approximately 1,100 previously undocumented species! It’s an amazing feat which shows how much is left to learn about the diversity that surrounds us. Fun is the organizing principle of BioBlitz. We’ll again be based at the south (Creekside) end of Whistler, which allows lots of opportunities for participants to kibitz with each other. Here’s the schedule:
We hope you can join us! Please RSVP to Bob at bob@snowlineresearch.ca (phone 604-932-8900). |
We had a great turn-out in 2015 for our first year in the Nepisiguit Protected Natural Area/Mount Carleton Provincial Park and made some interesting discoveries- the oldest red pines in Atlantic Canada, new lichens and fungi for the region, good data on ants in the PNA, 2 earthworms new to the province, and good samples of amphibians for work on the incidence of chytrid fungal disease in New Brunswick. For 2016 we will be back in the Nepisiguit Protected Natural Area/Mount Carleton Provincial Park for our final year, from August 10-23.
