2017 Rouge National Urban Park BioBlitz Volunteer Information and Application Form
Outline of Volunteer Participation
Able to commit a minimum of one 4-hour shift* during the weekend (2-day) event. List of shifts available on Application Form, embedded on web page below. *shift times may vary
Be available to attend a training/orientation session prior to the event (date TBD)
All volunteers will receive breaks relative to shift lengths
Volunteers are required to communicate shift changes, roles, and other questions or concerns regarding their duties with the Volunteer Coordinator
The Volunteer Coordinator is your point of contact on the day of the event when assisting with any issues such as supplies, late-arrivals, cancellations, or first-aid
This is a two-day event, if your availability changes, you must notify us as soon as possible so that someone else can fill your shift
Volunteers that are under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult (the adult must fill out all required information on one (1) application form)
Skills and abilities requested of volunteers*
Good customer service, comfortable approaching and talking to new people
Work well in both fast-paced and quiet environments
Able to sit or stand for long stretches of time
Work well as part of a team
Strong attention to detail and accuracy to check-in and register participants
Able to walk on uneven terrain for 30+ minutes
Able to comfortably lift 25lbs (setting up tables, carrying boxes of t-shirts) is strongly recommended
Knowledge of, and willingness to learn about the BioBlitz Canada 150 program
Access to a mobile phone for communication with Volunteer Coordinator and volunteer team the day of the event is a strong asset
Access to a vehicle is a strong asset for volunteers working at satellite Guided Blitz locations(Bob Hunter Memorial Park and Rouge Beach)
*Exceptions for persons with disabilities or special needs who would like to volunteer can be accommodated - please indicate this at the end of the Online Volunteer Form.

Volunteer hours for high school students
Opportunity to assist Guided Blitz Leaders during sessions for volunteers working more than a 4-hour shift

BioBlitz Volunteer Roles by Location
ROUGE NATIONAL URBAN PARK ZOO ROAD WELCOME AREA (Base Camp) Location: 1749 Meadowvale Rd, Scarborough, ON M1B 5W8 Hours of Operation: 8:00 am - Midnight Saturday June 24 5:30 am - 2:00 pm Sunday June 25 Registration / Info Station Volunteers
Information package distribution
T-shirt and “Swag” distribution
Check-in for Intensive Blitz scientists
Check-in for Guided Blitz participants
Waiver signing
Serve as an “Info Booth” to provide public & registrants information post event opening ceremony
Assist with setup and takedown of station as needed, and other tasks as assigned
Wayfinding & Parking Assistant
Equipment: Safety Vests supplied
Assist with parking management and directing car traffic at parking area
Provide general direction, guidance, and answer questions around Base Camp to incoming scientists, guided blitz participants and the general public
Direct foot traffic to different stations at the event. I.e Festivals, Campgrounds, restrooms etc.
Assisting with ParkBus arrivals and departures
Assist with setup and takedown of event as needed, and other tasks as assigned
Festival Assistant
Greet, clicker count and orient visitors entering the Public Festival area
Distribution of festival maps
Line management for kids activities & food truck stations
Serve as attendants at bike charging station
Assist partner organizations with table/tent setup and takedown, and other tasks as assigned
Tent City Security & Runner
Minimum age: 18 years old
Ensure perimeter of overnight “Tent City” campground is secure and no outside attendees will be entering the premise throughout the duration of the event
Hourly walk around to check campground perimeter
Direct traffic through campground areas to ensure no major access points are blocked
Assist loading and unloading vehicles as required
As a “Runner”, assist break coverages during rotations at various stations in base camp
Other tasks as assigned
